Largely self taught and strongly influenced by 17th century low country masters such as Metsu and de Hooch, Chardin became one of the greatest of the 18th century painters.
A lover of Still Life and Simple Subjects, subdued colors and soft lighting.
Later in life, as his eyesight began to fail, he turned to pastels which, whilst not appreciated then, are now highly valued.
