Israëls, Jozef (1824-1911)


Internationally renowned 19th Century Dutch painter


A leader of the Hague School, noted for his scenes of life among the Dutch fishing and peasant communities.


Trained at the Academie Minerva in Croningen (1835-42), Koninklijke Academie in Amsterdam (1842-44 and 1847-50) and Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris (1845-47).


During his latter spell at Koninklijke Academie he painted Daydreaming ( 'Ophelia' ) which established his reputation
