Degas, (Hilaire-Germain-) Edgar (1834-1917)


French painter and sculpter
Renowned for his ability to draw human and animal figures in motion and best known for his paintings, drawings and bronzes of ballerinas and of race horses.
Degas captures and expresses movement, stressing balance and with a clarity of outline which distinguishes him from other Impressionist painters.
He commenced his art studies with Louis Lamothes, a pupil of Jean Auguste Ingres who was revered by Degas, following which he stayed in Italy for 5 years studying Italian art, especially Renaissance. Later, following his return to Paris he met, and became greatly influenced by Édouard Manet.
