Signac, Paul (1863-1935)

Virtually self taught French painter.

As a Neo-Impressionist he developed with Georges Seurat the technique known as pointillism, or divisionism, which uses small dots or strokes of contrasting color to create subtle changes in form.

He was able to use this technique to the full on his Landscapes which constitute the bulk of his works.

He was President of the annual Salon des Independants from 1908 to 1934 during which time he actively encouraged young artists and their controversial works in Fauvism and Cubism.
